The amazing blue patterned pottery from Gzhel is deservedly popular with foreign tourists coming on tours to Moscow. It won numerous prizes at many exhibitions in Russia and overseas, and is imported to many countries.
Gzhel pottery owes its popularity to its highly decorative, hand-crafted style. During the Russian Gzhel Tour you will be able to paint the clay toys yourself and, in case you stay in Russia for a fortnight, have them baked in the real high-temperature Gzhel ovens and delivered to you in Moscow.
Gzhel painting takes talent or highly trained skills (honed at the Gzhel Artistic Institute or inherited from generations of pottery-masters). You will see a wide range of intricate Gzhel souvenirs, pottery, toys made here (not China china) to choose from for your friends, relatives, loved ones and colleagues. Gzhel Artistic Institute is one of the few higher education institutes in Russia to develop rich traditions of the folk craft.
Signature Gzhel patterns are often used in graphic design of many products – clocks, cars, dresses, textiles, footwear, appliances – you name it, and even iPhones – just google ‘picture of gzhel iphone’ and you’ll see hundreds of examples with Gzhel patterns. Gzhel souvenirs and pottery easily match modern interiors. In the pictures below you can see Gzhel souvenirs in the McDonald's restaurant in Sergiev Posad, close to St. Sergius Trinity Lavra.
For centuries Gzhel supplied Russia with pottery. Gzhel is just one (though the central one) of a few dozen villages in the area. The population was enticed into pottery by available fine clay and the proximity of Moscow. The old Gzhel folk craft became an industry after the 1917 revolution. Gzhel district is not far from Angel’s HQ which is another reason why Angel promotes trips to Gzhel among its clients.
During the Russian Gzhel Tour you will:
- see the Museum of Gzhel
- listen to the history of Gzhel craft
- partake in painting Gzhel workshop
- see the production (molding and painting) facilities of Gzhel
Gzhel production facilities are amazing place to visit as you will see how these masterpieces are created.
Take Gzhel painting class to feel the process and imagine how masters paint dozens figurines a day. Take the figurine you painted with you right away or have it baked in the high temperature oven and delivered to you later in Moscow.
